{"id":506,"date":"2018-06-06T14:07:01","date_gmt":"2018-06-06T14:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wptest.mdek12.org\/testsite2\/2018\/06\/06\/mississippi-promotes-stem-education-in-schools-districts-through-grants\/"},"modified":"2018-06-06T14:07:01","modified_gmt":"2018-06-06T14:07:01","slug":"mississippi-promotes-stem-education-in-schools-districts-through-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wpdev01.mdek12.org\/communications\/2018\/06\/06\/mississippi-promotes-stem-education-in-schools-districts-through-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"Mississippi Promotes STEM Education in Schools, Districts Through Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NEWS RELEASE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>For Immediate Release: May 2, 2018<\/em><\/p>\n<p>JACKSON, Miss. \u2013 Nearly a dozen Mississippi school districts will share $886,000 in grants to enhance or establish programs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in Kindergarten through 8<sup><font size=\"2\">th<\/font><\/sup> grade.<\/p>\n<p>The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) awarded funding for the K-8 STEM Initiative Enhancement Project Grant, which will support implementation of STEM activities in classrooms and coursework, while providing technology upgrades and educator training to implement STEM applications. Priority was given to schools implementing engineering, computer science, robotics, and other project-based STEM activities to expand the current Mississippi College and Career Readiness standards for math and\/or science K-8.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese dollars will help schools get students interested in the STEM field at an earlier age. This will allow us to expand opportunities for students at the high school level to be ready to enter STEM related fields either in college or in the workplace,\u201d said Jean Massey, executive director of secondary education.<\/p>\n<p>Mississippi\u2019s districts and schools selected, by competitive request for application, to receive the grant include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Booneville School District \u2013 Booneville Middle School<\/li>\n<li>Cleveland School District \u2013 BL Bell Academy, DM Smith Elementary School, Hayes Cooper Center, and Pearman Elementary School<\/li>\n<li>Columbia School District \u2013 Columbia Elementary School, Columbia Primary School, and Jefferson Middle School<\/li>\n<li>Corinth School District \u2013 Corinth Elementary School<\/li>\n<li>DeSoto County School District \u2013 Horn Lake Middle School<\/li>\n<li>Lauderdale County Schools \u2013 Clarkdale Elementary School, Northeast Lauderdale Elementary, Southeast Lauderdale Elementary, and West Lauderdale Elementary School<\/li>\n<li>Long Beach School District \u2013 Reeves Elementary School<\/li>\n<li>Natchez-Adams School District \u2013 McLaurin Elementary School, Susie B.
