{"id":698,"date":"2020-08-14T13:19:18","date_gmt":"2020-08-14T13:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wptest.mdek12.org\/testsite2\/2020\/08\/14\/mde-raises-concerns-about-osa-report-on-career-and-technical-education_20200814\/"},"modified":"2020-08-14T13:19:18","modified_gmt":"2020-08-14T13:19:18","slug":"mde-raises-concerns-about-osa-report-on-career-and-technical-education_20200814","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wpdev01.mdek12.org\/communications\/2020\/08\/14\/mde-raises-concerns-about-osa-report-on-career-and-technical-education_20200814\/","title":{"rendered":"MDE Raises Concerns About OSA Report on Career and Technical Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NEWS RELEASE<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For Immediate Release: August 14, 2020<\/p>\n<p>JACKSON, Miss. \u2014 The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) is raising concerns about the Office of the State Auditor (OSA) report on career and technical education (CTE) because it contains inaccurate information and it holds MDE responsible for work conducted by the National Strategic Planning and Research Center (nSPARC) at Mississippi State University.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The OSA report cites MDE for not accurately measuring the impact that CTE has on students; however, nSPARC and the Lifetracks data system it oversees conducts those measurements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MDE has no jurisdiction over the actions and\/or guidelines of nSPARC and Lifetracks,\u201d said Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education. \u201cAny findings regarding nSPARC and Lifetracks should not be included in a report about MDE\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The audit also erroneously reported conflicts between MDE and Lifetracks data. There is no conflict because two different groups of students were included in the data OSA reviewed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMississippi\u2019s CTE programs meet the standards and reporting requirements of the federal Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. The U.S. Department of Education recently approved our latest Perkins plan, which proves we have implemented the law with fidelity,\u201d Wright said. \u201cThe MDE stands by the quality of our state\u2019s CTE programs, which have adapted to the changing demands of the state\u2019s labor market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CTE enrollment in Mississippi has increased by 17% from 2016 to 2019.
