{"id":1371,"date":"2017-11-28T18:32:05","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T18:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wptest.mdek12.org\/testsite2\/instructor_information\/"},"modified":"2024-09-10T15:53:28","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T15:53:28","slug":"instructor_information","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wpdev01.mdek12.org\/jrotc\/instructor_information\/","title":{"rendered":"Instructor Information"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>ASVAB Career Exploration Program<\/h5>\n<div id=\"ctl00_MainContentPlaceHolder_C071_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_listsControl_ctrl0_listItemsControl_ctrl0_listItemContent\" class=\"sflistItemContent sflistItemContentExp\">\n<p>Unlike when the ASVAB test is administered at the MEPS, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asvabprogram.com\/\">ASVAB Career Exploration Program<\/a> is administered in the high school setting and it combines the test with an interest self-assessment and a wide range of career exploration tools. \u00a0It is free to participating schools.\u00a0 In addition to its outstanding value as a career exploration tool, taking the ASVAB also helps prepare students for other timed standardized tests.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asvabprogram.com\/\">ASVAB Career Exploration Program<\/a> can be administered to students during their 10th, 11th, or 12th grade year.\u00a0\u00a0When it is administered during the 10th grade, the ASVAB results are valid for career exploration only, are not released to military recruiters, and cannot be used for military enlistment purposes.<\/p>\n<p>JROTC instructors are encouraged to support the administration of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asvabprogram.com\/\">ASVAB Career Exploration Program<\/a> in their school to all students (during their 10th, 11th, or 12th grade year).\u00a0 If this is not feasible, it may be possible to schedule the program for JROTC students, or for a select group of students who sign-up for the program.<\/p>\n<p>The points of contact for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asvabprogram.com\/\">ASVAB Career Exploration Program<\/a> are the Education Services Specialists on staff at the MEPS.\u00a0 At the Jackson MEPS this is Mrs. Martha Ueltschey at 601-355-4650\/3835 ext. 263; 800-323-0513; or <a href=\"mailto:martha.m.ueltschey.civ@mail.mil\">martha.m.ueltschey.civ@mail.mil<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Language Resources<\/h5>\n<div id=\"ctl00_MainContentPlaceHolder_C071_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_listsControl_ctrl0_listItemsControl_ctrl1_listItemContent\" class=\"sflistItemContent sflistItemContentExp\">\n<p>Some JROTC instructors have expressed a need to gain a level of proficiency in a foreign language, in order to effectively communicate with some students and parents.\u00a0 The Department of Defense <a href=\"http:\/\/jlu.wbtrain.com\/\">Joint Language University<\/a> has online language resources available to assist in gaining language proficiency.\u00a0 As military retirees, all JROTC instructors are eligible to use the <a href=\"http:\/\/jlu.wbtrain.com\/\">Joint Language University<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 For those instructors eligible to access Navy Knowledge Online, there are also language resources available there, in the e-learning section.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish is the language that seems to be the greatest need among JROTC instructors.\u00a0 There are numerous commercial websites available for learning Spanish.\u00a0 Some offer instruction for free, others have a charge, or will charge for higher level instruction.\u00a0\u00a0 A web search will reveal numerous websites.\u00a0 Listed below are some examples of the sites available.\u00a0 This is by no means a complete list of all the websites available, and these websites are in no way endorsed or recommended above other websites.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spanishdict.com\/\">http:\/\/www.spanishdict.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Fundraisers<\/h5>\n<div id=\"ctl00_MainContentPlaceHolder_C071_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_listsControl_ctrl0_listItemsControl_ctrl2_listItemContent\" class=\"sflistItemContent sflistItemContentExp\">\n<p>JROTC units typically have some of the largest and most successful fundraisers at their school.\u00a0 As you make your fundraising plans, please consider healthy options rather than candy sales.\u00a0 There are many other alternatives for successful fundraisers that support healthy lifestyles.\u00a0\u00a0Healthy fundraising ideas are available at: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cspinet.org\/schoolfundraising.pdf\">http:\/\/www.cspinet.org\/schoolfundraising.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many of the healthy alternatives can actually generate more funds for your JROTC program than selling candy.\u00a0 Candy and other foods\/beverages with little nutritional value sold as fundraisers, sold at school concessions, or served in celebration events are discouraged or forbidden by many School Wellness Policies.<\/p>\n<p>JROTC needs to be part of the healthy solution, rather than part of the problem.\u00a0 It is time to change the culture, and help our students and community make healthier choices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>JROTC Substitution for Physical Education and Health<\/h5>\n<div id=\"ctl00_MainContentPlaceHolder_C071_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_listsControl_ctrl0_listItemsControl_ctrl3_listItemContent\" class=\"sflistItemContent sflistItemContentExp\">The Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) program has an outstanding curriculum which includes strong emphasis on physical education and health education.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0JROTC can substitute for the \u00bd Carnegie unit graduation requirements for PE and\/or Health. \u00a0For further explanation and the references relating to this, <a href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/Offices\/MDE\/OAE\/CTE\/JROTC\/jrotcsubstitutionexplanation.pdf\">click here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Career Pathways Graduation Option<\/h5>\n<div id=\"ctl00_MainContentPlaceHolder_C071_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_listsControl_ctrl0_listItemsControl_ctrl4_listItemContent\" class=\"sflistItemContent sflistItemContentExp\">JROTC is included as a Career Pathway graduation option, under the Government and Public Administration cluster &#8211; National Security pathway.\u00a0 <a href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/Offices\/MDE\/OAE\/CTE\/JROTC\/click-here-.pdf\">Click here<\/a>\u00a0to view an information booklet on this career pathway option.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Mississippi Area Field Trip Options<\/h5>\n<div id=\"ctl00_MainContentPlaceHolder_C071_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_listsControl_ctrl0_listItemsControl_ctrl5_listItemContent\" class=\"sflistItemContent sflistItemContentExp\"><a href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/Offices\/MDE\/OAE\/CTE\/JROTC\/mississippi-points-of-contact-for-field-trips-04-sep-2015_20150904111035_735305.pdf\">Mississippi Area Field Trip Options<\/a><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Gulfport Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC)<\/h5>\n<div id=\"ctl00_MainContentPlaceHolder_C071_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_listsControl_ctrl0_listItemsControl_ctrl6_listItemContent\" class=\"sflistItemContent sflistItemContentExp\">The\u00a0Mississippi Air National Guard\u00a0Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC) located in Gulfport offers a variety of support for JROTC field trips and events, as shown in this <a href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/Offices\/MDE\/OAE\/CTE\/JROTC\/power-point-presentation.pdf\">Power Point presentation<\/a>.\u00a0 In addition, JROTC units can contact the CRTC to arrange tours of the bombing range\/assault strip at Camp Shelby.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>JROTC Awards Information<\/h5>\n<div id=\"ctl00_MainContentPlaceHolder_C071_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_listsControl_ctrl0_listItemsControl_ctrl7_listItemContent\" class=\"sflistItemContent sflistItemContentExp\"><a href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/Offices\/MDE\/OAE\/CTE\/JROTC\/jrotc-awards-information-22oct13_20131022150802_124654.docx\">JROTC Awards Information 22Oct13_20131022150802_124654<\/a><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Associates Degree Requirement<\/h5>\n<div id=\"ctl00_MainContentPlaceHolder_C071_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_listsControl_ctrl0_listItemsControl_ctrl8_listItemContent\" class=\"sflistItemContent sflistItemContentExp\">\n<p>Navy, Army, and Marine Corps Enlisted JROTC instructors must have at least an associates degree within 5 years of initial employment.\u00a0 Enlisted Air Force JROTC instructors must have a Bachelor&#8217;s degree.\u00a0 This is a condition of employment and is a federal requirement that will not be waived.\u00a0 This degree should be from an accredited college or university.<\/p>\n<p>The accreditation status of colleges can be verified at the U.S. Department of Education web site at:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ope.ed.gov\/accreditation\/Search.aspx\">http:\/\/ope.ed.gov\/accreditation\/Search.aspx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those instructors who are registered with the Veterans Administration, and receiving disability benefits, may qualify for educational assistance to cover the cost of obtaining an associates degree through the VA&#8217;s Vocational Rehabilitation program.\u00a0 Information on this program can be found at:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vba.va.gov\/bln\/vre\/index.htm\">http:\/\/www.vba.va.gov\/bln\/vre\/index.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Children First Act of 2009<\/h5>\n<div id=\"ctl00_MainContentPlaceHolder_C071_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_listsControl_ctrl0_listItemsControl_ctrl9_listItemContent\" class=\"sflistItemContent sflistItemContentExp\">Per the <a href=\"http:\/\/billstatus.ls.state.ms.us\/documents\/2009\/html\/SB\/2600-2699\/SB2628SG.htm\">Children First Act of 2009<\/a>, students who fail to attain a 2.0 average for their semester grades will be suspended from participation in extracurricular activities during the following semester.\u00a0 This suspension can only be removed by attaining at least a 2.0 average for subsequent semester grades.\u00a0 This requirement impacts cadet eligibility to participate in extracurricular (outside of class time) JROTC activities.\u00a0 The state law code for this is: \u00a037-11-65.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Mississippi JROTC Educator License<\/h5>\n<div id=\"ctl00_MainContentPlaceHolder_C071_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_listsControl_ctrl0_listItemsControl_ctrl10_listItemContent\" class=\"sflistItemContent sflistItemContentExp\">The Mississippi JROTC educator license lends professional credibility to JROTC instructors and puts them on an equal status with other certified teachers. The Mississippi JROTC educator license (endorsement code 499) is valid for a period of 3 years. The requirements for applying for the license and renewal of the license, are on page 33 of the document at the following link: Licensure Guidelines (PAGE 33)<\/div>\n<div class=\"sflistItemContent sflistItemContentExp\">\nAll JROTC instructors should ensure that they maintain a current Mississippi JROTC teaching license. Mississippi teachers may now access their teaching license online through the Educator Licensure Management System. JROTC instructors may view their credentials and degrees that are on file. The online renewal process does not apply to JROTC licenses.
