June 2017<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><u><strong>Automatic One-Year Extension<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>The Mississippi State Board of Education granted approval on February 25, 2021 to suspend licensure renewal requirements for\u00a0all\u00a0licenses scheduled to expire on June 30, 2021 and granted a one-year extension for all licenses\u00a0with a\u00a0June 30, 2021 expiration date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All license types\u00a0set to expire on\u00a0June 30, 2021 have been\u00a0automatically\u00a0extended to June 30, 2022.\u00a0This\u00a0includes teacher, administrator, instructional support personnel, and local district requested licenses.\u00a0Educators do not\u00a0need to\u00a0apply\u00a0for the one-year extension.<\/strong>\u00a0All licenses set to expire on June 30, 2021 have been automatically extended for one year in the\u00a0Educator Licensure Management System (ELMS).<\/p>\n<p>License holders have the one-year extension\u00a0to engage in professional learning opportunities\u00a0to\u00a0meet requirements\u00a0for maintaining, converting, or obtaining the standard Mississippi license.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Invalidate a Local District-Requested License<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Local\u00a0school\u00a0districts are to follow the normal procedure of\u00a0submitting\u00a0a formal letter to the\u00a0MDE\u00a0Division of Educator Licensure\u00a0to request\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>invalidation<\/strong>\u00a0of a district-requested license if an individual holding a district-requested license voluntarily or involuntarily separates from the\u00a0district for any reason,\u00a0at any time.\u00a0This means\u00a0districts must\u00a0submit\u00a0letters\u00a0for any individuals holding a district-requested license who will not be offered\u00a0a new contract for the 2021-2022 school year. This includes\u00a0district-requested license\u00a0holders whose licenses have\u00a0been extended to June 30, 2022.\u00a0\u00a0Please\u00a0email\u00a0invalidation request letters to\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Cory Murphy at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:teachersupport@mdek12.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teachersupport@mdek12.org<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0include \u201cRequest to Invalidate Local District Requested License\u201d in the subject line.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Programs Completed Outside the State of Mississippi<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Effective February 22, 2021, prospective and practicing educators seeking to obtain initial licensure in the state of Mississippi by way of completion of a program outside of Mississippi, shall first be licensed in the state where the preparation occurred. Upon obtaining the out-of-state license, the candidate shall submit an application with required supporting documentation to the MDE Division of Educator Licensure for the purpose of determining eligibility to obtain a Mississippi license via Reciprocity guidelines in effect on the date the complete application is received by the MDE.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Verification of Lawful Presence<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>New Requirement<\/strong>:\u00a0On December 17, 2020, the Mississippi Board of Education granted approval to amend the current licensure application process to include procedures for verifying an applicant&#8217;s lawful presence in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Effective with applications received January 1, 2021 and thereafter, Citizens of the United States\u00a0are required to submit appropriate documentation\u00a0for verification once during their next most immediate licensure application submission. Non-US citizens are required to submit appropriate documentation for verification with each licensure application submission, or when their United States Citizenship and Immigration Services documents expire, whichever comes first. Licensure application(s) shall not be processed if the applicant fails to answer the request for documentation required for verification of lawful presence in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Any initial or renewable license issued to an applicant who is not a United States citizen shall expire in accordance with the appropriate validity date required by a particular license type but, shall not exceed the expiration date of the applicant&#8217;s authorized stay in the United States, whichever is the lesser period of time.\u00a0 A change in a Non-US citizen\u2019s lawful presence status will affect his\/her ability to receive or continue to hold a Mississippi educator license.<\/p>\n<p>It shall be the responsibility of the prospective or practicing educator to obtain and provide the MDE with required documentation regarding his\/her United States citizenship or lawful presence status. \u00a0This document is built into all online applications within MECCA.
