{"id":2146,"date":"2022-07-08T16:22:34","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T16:22:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wptest.mdek12.org\/testsite2\/dropout-prevention-2\/"},"modified":"2024-10-15T16:05:32","modified_gmt":"2024-10-15T16:05:32","slug":"dropout-prevention-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wpdev01.mdek12.org\/ocsa\/dropout-prevention-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Dropout Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom: 11px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Graduating from high school is a strong predictor of adult success which includes physical and mental health outcomes.\u00a0 Mississippi is committed to improving the number of students who graduate each year college and Career Ready (State Board Goal 2).\u00a0 As required by state law, each school district shall implement an annual dropout prevention plan.\u00a0 The plan must be board approved and posted on the district website homepage by\u00a0<strong><span style=\"padding: 0in; border: 1pt windowtext;\">August 1<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"padding: 0in; border: 1pt windowtext; font-size: 8pt;\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">st<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">\u00a0of each school year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-bottom: 11px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/grad_rate_2021_transparent1.png\" alt=\"graduation rates\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"e6a8cd4e-a2f1-4b75-af87-a5072473c36a\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>Each high school with a graduation rate below 85% is required to develop a graduation restructuring plan. Representatives from the feeder middle schools should be included in the restructuring planning team. The newly created dropout Prevention\/ Restructuring Plan is due to Danny Rochelle, <a href=\"mailto:drochelle@mdek12.org\">drochelle@mdek12.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"x\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">How are \u201crepeaters,\u201d or students that do not graduate within four years included in the calculation of graduation rates?<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Mississippi calculates graduation rates consistent with federal requirements for a <\/span><a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdek12.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Offices\/MDE\/OA\/ODSP\/used_2017_acgr_guidance.pdf\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">.\u00a0 Every student in the four-year cohort is assigned one of five statuses: <i>Graduate, Dropout, Completer<\/i>, <i>Still Enrolled<\/i>, or <i>Excluded<\/i>. <i>Excluded <\/i>students are those who move out of state, transfer to home school, transfer to private school, or are deceased during the four-year cohort timeframe. \u00a0<i>Still Enrolled<\/i> are students that continue enrollment beyond the four-year timeframe.\u00a0 These may be students that needed to repeat a grade or are students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that continues beyond four years.\u00a0 A chart of student code designations may be found on page nine of the Mississippi Department of Education\u2019s <\/span><a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdek12.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/graduation_rates_guidance_draft_4.12.19.docx\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Four-Year Adjusted Cohort Graduation and Completion Calculation Guidance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> document. <\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Although the Unites States Department of Education (USDE) does not require the reporting of a dropout rate by states, the MDE does report the number of students in the four-year adjusted cohort who dropped out at any time during the four-year timeframe.\u00a0 The USDE does collect completer and dropout annual counts (not associated with a cohort) from each state. So, it is possible to find Federally reported annual counts and\/or rates for dropouts; however, it should be noted that Federal dropout rates are not calculated as a four-year cohort rate.\u00a0 The USDE calculates a \u201cstatus dropout rate\u201d which considers whether a person earns a diploma or GED by the age of 24.\u00a0 For the purposes of clarity and consistency, MDE reports all \u201crates\u201d using the four-year adjusted cohort method.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 8.25pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Graduation rate\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"b59a28cc-8f71-4d96-90cb-da0ec3d9adeb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdek12.org\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/graduation_rate_1.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Statewide Dropout Rate 6-Year History\" data-align=\"center\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"c9f0c3ba-86ae-421b-81c3-e6bc3040dae4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdek12.org\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/6_years_dropout_rate.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For information on dropout rates for your school\/district and other key findings, consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/wpdev01.mdek12.org\/publicreporting\/Accountability\/\"><u>Accountability System District Graduation and Dropout Rates<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Difference Between Graduation Rate and Dropout Rate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In considering the annual dropout rate, it is critical to note that this rate is not the same as the four-year cohort graduation rate. The cohort graduation rate follows a group of ninth graders across four years\u2019 time and reports the percentage of these students who graduate four years after beginning high school.<\/p>\n<p>The annual dropout rate illustrates the number and percentage of students who drop out during one year\u2019s time. Some of these students may return to school the following year and complete high school while others may drop out multiple times.
